A truly cosmopolitan city, Dubai offers a varied and enjoyable social life. Apart from business functions, dinner parties and barbeques are popular forms of private entertainment. The leading hotels offer a wide range of facilities including dinner theatre, concerts and other attractions. Many expatriate families purchase four wheel drive vehicles and make regular expeditions with friends into the desert and wadis (dried river beds) to camp and enjoy the attractive scenery.

Cultural interests are well catered for and a number of clubs and societies exist for those interested in art, music and drama.

Recreational and sporting facilities in Dubai are excellent. The area is ideal for all types of water sports - diving, sailing, fishing and water-skiing. Such activities can be arranged both through specialised clubs or the leading hotels and tour operators on an ad hoc basis.

On land, the Emirates Golf Club has attracted considerable attention around the world as the home of the Desert Classic, part of the European PGA Tour, while the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club hosts an event on the Asian PGA Tour. Dubai's third grass course, the Dubai Golf and Racing Club is also of championship standard. Golf may also be played on sand at the Dubai Country Club.

Tennis, squash and health club facilities are readily available in Dubai. It is also possible to ride, ice-skate, bowl, go-kart or play rugby, polo or cricket.
