Shopping

Normal shopping hours are 8.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. - 8.00 p.m., Saturday to Thursday. Most shops are closed for a period on Friday. Bargaining is normal in the souks (markets) but not in supermarkets or modern shopping malls.

There are many excellent supermarkets stocking a comprehensive range of foodstuff, including most major international brand name items. Most of the large supermarket groups have vegetables and fresh meat flown in from Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc. Pork is available from supermarkets for non-Muslims but sold from separate counters. Local vegetables can also be bought and these are available seasonally. Fresh fish is excellent and meat is of good quality. Fresh, long life and powdered milk is available in Dubai. Dubai Municipality keeps a close watch on the expiry date of products.

Alcohol is obtainable from two suppliers in Dubai who have several outlets. It is not possible to buy alcohol without a licence. These are issued by the Police Department only to non-Muslims holding a residence visa. The alcohol licence is valid for one year only, but can easily be renewed.

Dubai is an important regonal retail centre attracting shoppers from throughout the Middle East and as far afield as Russia and Thailand. All products are therefore available, from clothing to cosmetics, toys, books and electronic products.
